Nostalgia, eh? It’s a terrible thing. We remember Super Mario Bros. 3 being better then it is now, (Only just, natch) and Starwing isn’t nearly as mind-numbingly brilliant as Gibbon use to think it was these days. But time has been kind to Sonic the Hedgehog, with all his red-booted, finger-waggling, spiky-headed old ways.
It may be because Sonic remains a favourite here at KN, or that he’s got considerably worse over time, or it might just be that this original is a bloomin’ brilliant videogame.
It appears to be a bit of all three.
The design is spot-on, and even if Unleashed has all thoughts flash visuals and extreme speed, the graphics are just right for the Sonic series- Cute, and also deadly at times. The bosses are great fun, and this is just generally a superb experience. Download now.
Verdict
Arguably Sonic's finest outing, while it's nothing compared to Sonic 2, compared to almost every other 16-Bit Platformer, it's everything.

OK, we’ll get straight to the point. This is the best game in the Sonic series. By far. In fact, we could go as far as saying this is the best 2D Platformer of all-time, if it wasn’t for Super Mario World. Sonic 2 must be downloaded at any cost.
In here, Tails is actualy a decent character, and there’s none of that ‘Attitude’ that’s wrecked Sonic in recent days. This is the game that the Megadrive/Dreamcast was made for. We simply have nothing bad to say about Sonic 2. The Co-Op is superb, the level design is flawless, (Even if that level with the water wasn’t as good as the rest) and the fast-paced, upbeat, musical score is even better than the original’s.
Download or we’ll spin dash your face off.
Verdict
The second download to get a 10/10 rating from us, with on Ocarina of Time pipping it. This is an utterly superb game, with next to nothing wrong with it.

That Sonic, eh? He’s gone and scored a hat trick in record time, with all three of his best games available on Virtual Console now. It’s basically Sonic 2 (Which is the BEST SONIC GAME EVER.) but with better Graphics- The things that got everyone caught up with it back in the ‘90s, improved Music (It’s rumoured that Micheal Jackson provided the score, but his name was dropped from the credits when the controversies began.) and a new nemesis for Sonic- Knuckles.
However, it’s not quite as good as Sonic 3. We can’t lay our finger on it, but the design’s ever-so-slightly off, the special stages aren’t that good fun, and Tails is beginning to slip into that ‘Annoying’ look he’s gained ever since.
Still, it’s tough than the others, and it’s an absolute hoot. Wii is attracting families to games, but no game we found better than Sonic 3- Many Dads old favourites, and the perfect thing to remind them that it’s all Bully and Grand Theft Auto.
